Types of Aari Needles, their uses in Embroidery & story of origin.

To know and understand about aari needles let’s first find out how the name Aari came. Aari word is derived from an English word Aar, which means something sharp.  So, Aari needle basically means a sharp needle.

Even now, these Aari embroidery needles are fully made by Hand. Small cylindrical iron rods are rubbed with the help of a tool and sand paper to give the exact shape.

In earlier times, like Mughal era aari needles were used only for doing thread work. So, those needles were thick. With the coming of Beads, Sequins and other embellishment materials the needle became more refine. The needle for Japanese beads is the thinnest aari needle that you can have.

Now, let’s discuss more in details about aari needles for threads work on thin and thick fabrics.

First thread work on thin fabrics like georgette, chiffon, silk etc: - If you are using these light weight fabrics and want to do thread work on them then always choose the thinnest needle like Style–A. Why? Because with thick needle like Style-C fabric can be destroy while doing embroidery. You will be able to do embroidery with 1 or 2 strings of threads with Style-A needle.

Now thread work on thick fabrics like Raw silk or even leather: - The trickiest part in this before doing the embroidery is to do holes in fabric. Some Artisans first make holes in these fabrics with thick needles like Style-C and then do the embroidery. This way the Artist can concentrate more on the design and finish while doing hand embroidery. Style-B Aari needles will be perfect for zari cords of 1MM size and Style-C is ideal when you are using 3 to 5 strings of thread or 2 cords of 1MM size.

The Aari needles for beads and sequins are different from the threads ones. The difference is the neck of needle. Beads, Sequins and Rhinestones needle has a straight long neck as compare to V shape neck of threads needle. The long neck of needle helps the artist to fill the supplies on the needle when doing the embroidery. This way the work happens a lot faster.

There are only two versions of this needle, One with short neck and the other with long neck. If you are beginner then we will suggest that you first go with small neck. The long neck needle is little tough to handle and need expertise.

The other invention that has happened in the category of embroidery needle is the handle of them. You can get wood handle needles and metal handles which are decorated with Rubber sleeves and thread wrapping.
